Last January, the Internet was buzzing with news that J. Cole had proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Melissa Heholt, and planned to tie the knot with her. However, just as quickly as the news came, it was seemingly forgotten in just a matter of weeks and fans heard nothing else about the engagement from then on. But now, after a year of waiting, fans finally discovered what happened thanks to a candid interview between Cole and film director Ryan Coogler.
According to media reports, on Monday night, the Blackout For Human Rights organization hosted the #MLKNow event at the Riverside Church in NYC. Several activists and celebs showed up to speak at the event, and Cole sat down for an interview with Coogler.
In a short clip of the interview that’s been circulating the Web, Coogler is seen starting off the interview with a rather personal question and asked Cole, “How did getting married change you, bro?”
As expected, the notoriously private Cole was shocked by the question. “Oh, what is that my man?!” Cole replied.
“Don’t nobody know?” Coogler asked.
“Well, they know now,” said Cole as the crowd erupted in laughter.
We’re sure that Cole would’ve liked to have kept his marriage under wraps, but congratulations are still in order for him and Heholt.
